The Big Fibre Boost Is Here! Are You Making the Most of It?

The Big Fibre Boost Is Here! Are You Making the Most of It?
Thursday, 19 June 2025

As the way we live, work, and connect continues to evolve, Kiwis are relying on the internet more than ever. That’s why the local fibre companies across New Zealand — Chorus, Enable, Tuatahi First Fibre and Northpower Fibre — have committed to future-proofing your fibre broadband connection by continuing to invest in their networks… and bring you MORE SPEED!

Starting in June 2025, fibre connected homes across New Zealand will receive a permanent upgrade to their fibre broadband speed — it is being called The Big Fibre Boost… and it does exactly what it says on the tin!

Internet usage is soaring, and the way we connect to the world is changing faster than ever. Whether it’s for work, study, entertainment, or staying in touch, Kiwi households are now streaming, gaming, and connecting across multiple devices — all at once.

This is our new normal. We no longer tune in to scheduled TV — we binge full seasons on a rainy afternoon. Game discs and cartridges are a thing of the past, replaced by digital downloads. What is a CD? Our music libraries live online, and backups now go to the cloud, not a hard drive.

We’re spending more time online than ever before, with families juggling multiple screens and devices simultaneously. That’s why The Big Fibre Boost has been delivered — a nationwide initiative to increase fibre broadband speeds across Aotearoa. Making us even better connected and bumping us further up the table of the best connected countries in the world!

NZ Compare is proud to be part of this movement, we are reinforcing our commitment to helping Kiwis make a fully informed choice and we’re in the process of updating all the plans on our sites to accurately detail the new speeds being offered by retail providers all across the country.

Unfortunately, some internet providers have taken the opportunity to increase prices (Spark Price Increase) even though the networks have not. This is yet another reason for you to compare your plan and make a fully informed choice!

If you're currently using a fixed wireless connection, the Big Fibre Boost is another reason why you should be seriously considering fibre as a significantly better option. While fixed wireless can handle everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and light remote work, it falls short when compared to fibre. Fibre offers faster, more reliable performance — often at the same cost or even less. Unlike fixed wireless, which can be affected by factors like location, tower congestion, and equipment, fibre delivers consistent speeds and a much more stable experience.

Lots of smaller households will actually not yet need or use the speed increase they have received, meaning it could be an opportunity to try a slower speed, like a 100/20 fibre start offering. These plans start from under $60 a month and with many providers charging around $90 for a mid-speed plan (now 500/100) that could be a saving of well over $300 a year!

Not sure how much speed you need? Try our speed calculator — you may be surprised!

A 100/20 connection is still more than capable of streaming on multiple devices at the same time, so check out the options. A plan with a provider like Simply Broadband and their Essential plan (100/20Mbps for $59.59 a month) will allow you to upgrade to the next level without penalty if you find that the 100/20 speeds are not enough.

We implore you to use the calculator and compare the plans. You really could make a huge annual saving and still have internet that fully meets all your requirements.

So what are you waiting for? Take advantage of the big Fibre Boost today!
